Most Tax-Friendly

Washington is one of our most tax-friendly states because it doesn’t have an income tax. Unfortunately, the burden of other state and local taxes in the Evergreen State is heavier. The Tax Foundation’s average combined state and local sales tax rate for Washington is the fourth-highest in the country, as it its gas tax. Washington is also one of a handful of states with an estate tax.

Sales Tax

6.5% state levy. Municpalities can add up to 3.9% to that, with the average combined rate at 9.21%, according to the Tax Foundation.

Income Tax Range

Washington has no state income tax.

Motor Fuel Taxes

Gasoline: $0.4940 per gallon.
Diesel: $0.4940 per gallon.

Property Taxes

In Washington, residents pay an average of $1,125 in taxes per $100,000 of assessed home value.

Vehicle Taxes

For vehicle purchases, a 0.3% motor vehicle sales tax is charged on top of sales tax due at the rate of the purchaser’s residence.

Sin Taxes

Cigarettes and little cigars: $3.03 per pack
Cigars: 95% of sale price, with a cap of $0.75 per cigar
Moist snuff: $2.53 per 1.2-ounce container
Other tobacco products: 95% of sale price

Beer: $0.26 per gallon
Wine: $0.87 per gallon ($1.72 per gallon for alcohol content above 14%)
Liquor is taxed by the liter and as a percentage of selling cost; the Tax Foundation calculates this at $32.52 per gallon, the highest in the country.
Marijuana: 37%

Taxes On Wireless Service

Inheritance and Estate Taxes

An estate tax is imposed on estates exceeding $2.193 million. Rates range from 10% to 20%. Washington offers an additional $2.5 million deduction for family-owned businesses valued at less than $6 million.
